Year three children have been learning about chemical reactions in their recent Empiribox Science lessons. The latest lessons in 3 Owls focussed on irreversible changes and the children led their own experiments where they measured the reaction rate of rhubarb when it was dropped in a chemical called potassium permanganate.

We cut up three equally sized pieces of rhubarb. One was cut in half, one in quarters, and one cut into mush! All three reacted with the purple potassium permanganate solution because of the oxalic acid inside the rhubarb. We learned that the mushy rhubarb reacted quickest because it had the largest surface area!
